Record Number ILAC Members Met in Edinburgh

ILAC held its 2009 Annual General Meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland on 13-15 May. This was the seventh such meeting since ILAC became operational 1 September 2002. Previous meetings have been held in Stockholm (twice), Cairo, New Delhi, Puerto Rico and Rome.
The meeting in Edinburgh brought together a record number of members, a consequence of the fact that ILAC member organizations have increased from the initial number of 26 in 2002 to 43 today. As has become the custom over the years, ILAC combined the formal proceedings of the annual meeting with a seminar on a topic related to ILAC´s activities. This year the seminar discussed the co-existence of religious and secular law, under the same constitution, as illustrated by the current situation in Pakistan. The seminar was led by Dr. Martin Lau of University of London, one of the world´s foremost experts on the issue and author of the books “The Role of Islam in the Legal System of Pakistan” and “The Compatibility of Afghanistan´s Legal System with International  Human Rights Standards”.
