Iraqi Lawyers Trained with Grant from UNDEF
With a generous grant from the UN Democracy Fund (UNDEF), ILAC in cooperation with the International Bar Association and the Japan Federation of Bar Associations has run the first in a series of week-long training courses for Iraqi lawyers in international human rights law . The course was given the last week in March at the CEELI Institute in Prague, which is run under the auspices of the American Bar Association, to fifty lawyers from all parts of Iraq, who had been flown in on a special charter flight from Baghdad. The course was not only much appreciated by the lawyers, but was also an excellent illustration of the efficient cooperation within the ILAC consortium.
As a result of the improved security situation in Iraq, ILAC is hoping that the next such course can be held in Erbil in northern Iraq. ILAC will visit Iraq in June to explore this possibility.
